NASCAR Legends at the Rolex 24 at Daytona: Iconic Stock Car Drivers I’ve Photographed Competing in Sports Cars

Updated: Feb 2

I've always been impressed by race car drivers who can race and win in various types of racing equipment. Drivers like A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, and Tony Stewart have always been favorites of mine. They’ve shown their skills in stock cars, sports cars, and Indy cars.

A Glimpse into the Rolex 24 at Daytona

At the recent test leading up to this year's Rolex 24 at Daytona, I had the chance to photograph Ross Chastain and Conor Zilisch chatting in one of the IMSA team's pit stalls. This experience sparked some nostalgia. It reminded me of the NASCAR stars I've photographed over the years at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

Did you know that even back in 1966, the year of the very first 24-hour race at Daytona, NASCAR icon Bobby Allison was on the entry list? I attended that race as a kid with my dad, and it left a lasting impression on me.

NASCAR Legends at the Rolex 24

While this list is by no means comprehensive, here are a few NASCAR legends at the Rolex 24 whom I've had the pleasure of photographing at this iconic event.

A.J. Foyt

Let’s start with A.J. Foyt. While he is best known as an Indy Car driver, he won the Daytona 500 in 1972. Over his career, he triumphed in virtually all forms of racing. In 1983, the year these photos were taken, Foyt began a streak that saw him on the podium for four straight years. He won in 1983 and 1985, with second-place finishes in 1984 and 1986.

Bill Elliott

In 1987, Bill Elliott teamed up with Scott Pruett, Lyn St. James, and Tom Gloy in a Roush Mustang. Together, they won the GTO Class at Daytona. It was a memorable moment for all involved.

Dale Earnhardt

In 2001, NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt participated in his only Rolex 24 at Daytona. He finished fourth overall and second in the GTS class behind his Corvette team car. His co-drivers that year included his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr. It was a special moment for the family.

These two young, versatile NASCAR stars teamed up in a Crawford Daytona Prototype with sports car ace Andy Wallace. They finished on the DP class podium, staying in the mix for the overall victory until a late-race suspension issue slowed them down.

Jeff Gordon

Seven-time NASCAR Champion Jeff Gordon raced twice for Wayne Taylor Racing in the Rolex 24. He achieved an overall victory in 2017, teaming up with Ricky Taylor, Jordan Taylor, and Max Angelleli. It was a remarkable achievement that showcased his talent.

The Legacy of NASCAR Drivers at Daytona

As I mentioned, this is a limited list. The entire lineup includes legends like Kyle Larson, Mark Martin, Jimmie Johnson, AJ Allmendinger, Casey Mears, Danica Patrick, Rusty Wallace, and Kurt Busch, to name just a few.

I guess a racer is a racer. When the NASCAR season ends or a new one is about to start, a real race car driver will always find a way to go fast!
